Negotiated Trade: Organizations Demand Senate Ag Committee Take Action
The U.S. cattle industry requires bold leadership and fresh ideas to address the current inadequacies in the marketplace. KCA signed onto a letter to the U.S. Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry to hold a hearing to examine opportunities within the reauthorization of the Livestock Mandatory Reporting (LMR) program to realign the cattle marketplace with its fundamentals.
The program expires September 30, 2020, which gives the Senate approximately 30 workdays to move towards a tenable reauthorization. LMR is a complex program; a hearing would convene relevant stakeholders to publicly discuss needed program changes and provide additional information on the proposals that have already been introduced.
The livestock industry is a historically up and down, ever-changing marketplace due to its dependence on foreign market factors, domestic and international policies, and consumer trends; however, today’s marketplace lacks the transparency and true price discovery indicative of a healthy industry. We respectfully request this Committee convene its Members to consider the intricacies of this year’s reauthorization of livestock mandatory reporting.
Call Senator Roberts and let him know that you support Senate Bill 3693, the 50/14 rule, and a hearing is necessary. His office number is 202-224-4774
